Let me share a little history with you now and recommend you visit this beautiful architectural master piece, its grand interior decor and not to mention the gardens and landscaping will take your breath away!
I could go back further but let’s just start in the state of Maine in 1859 where James Deering was born. He was born into a family who made a business decision, quite a good one I might add, to invest in a farm equipment manufacturing company. These machines ended up revolutionizing the harvesting of grain and made a huge impact on profits for Midwest agriculture. James Deering and his older brother Charles Deering joined the family business, Deering Harvester Company, and helped with a merge that formed the company International Harvester. International Harvester became the largest agriculture machinery corporation in the nation and James Deering was the Vice President of this successful enterprise.
Well, often a time comes when we must retire from our ambitious endeavors and so it did for Mr. Deering. Having retired and experienced some health issues, where better to build the home of his dreams but in Coconut Grove, FL. In 1910 he purchased the land and from 1914-1922 built his glorious estate. He traveled Europe for art and furnishings and worked with a Columbian landscaper Diego Suarez in the design of the grounds. As you take the tour you will see influences from Greece, Asia, Italy, from places all over the world! One last piece of information you may find interesting . . . Just south of Vizcaya, do you know who built the Deering Estate, off Old Cutler Road in Palmetto Bay? That’s right, Charles Deering his older brother!
