If you had to come up with a mascot for Coconut Grove, what would it be?
Let me give you a couple of hints: wild, squawking, magnificent feathers, babies are called “peachicks”, the females are called “peahens”, the whole group would be called “peafowl”.
A PEACOCK of course!
Loved by some and scorned by others, these unusually large and colorful birds are found roaming freely all over the Grove. You’ve also probably noticed the peacock sculptures displayed throughout the area. Five years ago, in 2010, local businesses sponsored local artists to paint these large fiberglass sculptures with a plan of putting them up for auction 6 months later. The proceeds went to a charitable organization of the sponsor’s choice. A self guided tour was even created as each of these painted birds have a name and a story behind them. “Valentina Peacock” can be found in front our very own EWM office off of Main Hwy. This particular peacock was sponsored by EWM and Casa Valentina, a home for young women having to leave foster care due to their age. There is also “Stephen” found in front of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School, painted with the help of some of the school’s students. If you’re ever shopping at Milam’s grocery take notice of the 5 foot, hand painted, “Majestic Peacock”. I won’t be covering ALL the peacocks but if you have missed them before you’ll notice them now!
