Wines for the Weekend

Been away too long.  Sorry for that.  Well, it appears that summer is knocking at our door, if this week’s rains are any indication.  It’s time to start thinking about sipping summer whites, and even more interesting for those of you who are hankering for ABC (anything but chardonnay).

As the mercury and humidity start to rise, it’s a good time to explore refreshing, crisp whites to accompany our South Florida seafood cuisine.   Our friends at the famous Spanish winery Vega Sicilia are spreading their wings.  They have reached out across Southern Europe and purchased a Hungarian winery called Oremus.  This is their delicious and unique Dry Tokaji (those 2 words rhyme, by the way), called Mandolas.

We had the chance to enjoy this wine with two wonderful meals this week: first with the season’s last stone crabs and then with a shrimp and creamy tomato pasta.  The wine is a natural companion to seafood.  It is fresh and floral on the nose, crisp and clean on the palate, with perfect acidity for a wide range of dishes.  But it is no lightweight.  Albeit it is not the buttery, malolactic-fermented apple strained chardonnay that seems to be America’s white wine Idol (chardonnay) it has great heft in the mouth and can stand up to rich sauces and succulent crab and lobster meat.  It will be great poolside or at an intimate candlelit dinner. It is also quite reasonable.   I only know of one place in Miami that carries it: Sunset Corners.  www.sunsetcorners.com   Enjoy!
