Watermelon season is gone. It may be available throughout the year, but the real season is during the hot summer months. I know we just had those because I just looked at my last FPL bill. Watermelon is not just nutritious and tasty; it’s supposed to be FUN. The usual one found in the grocery stores today isn’t any fun at all and doesn’t have the same qualities as the really good ones. You have to get those from a truck at the side of the road somewhere. They have real flavor; the juice will run down your chin when eaten properly; and they have seeds – lots of real seeds. How else could you possibly teach your children or grandchildren how to spread a huge piece of plastic on the lawn and engage in the fine art required for a watermelon seed spitting contest? Next summer I hope the local grocery stores get the real ones so I don’t have to look for a truck on the side of the road.
