University of Miami Inaugurates Dr. Julio Frenk as President

Dr. Julio Frenk was inaugurated President of the University of Miami on January 29th in the Bank United Center on the Coral Gables campus. He succeeds Donna Shalala as the sixth President. Dr. Frenk, the university’s first physician president, served as Minister of Health in Mexico from 2000-2006. Dr. Frenk left his position as Dean of the School of Public Health at Harvard to become the President of the University of Miami. President Frenk announced a gift of $100 million from Phillip and Patricia Frost which is to be used for a major initiative to support basic and applied science and engineering. The agenda for his tenure includes pledges to make the University of Miami a leader in combating sea-level rise, 100 more endowed positions for faculty, promoting diversity on campus, and more scholarship and assistance funds.
