Tips for a Healthy & Happy Life – #2

Eliminate Monosodium Glutamate or MSG from your diet – you won’t regret it.

According to various sources including the FDA and my handy dandy food additives guide referenced at the end of this post, this controversial (at best) substance has the following potential effects:

bronchospasm, irritability, heart palpitations, nausea, abdominal discomfort, fibromyalgia, blurry vision, asthma, headaches, depression, migraines, sight impairment & bladder pain (similar to urinary or bladder infections).

In my case it caused three years of misdiagnoses and 8 rounds of unnecessary antibiotics (which is a horrendous thing to do to your body).

It is not recommended for children, yet it is found in baby food as Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protien.

Believe it or not MSG is still incredibly pervasive and UNBELIEVABLY addictive. We are practically nursed on MSG.

Used as a flavor enhancer, it can be found in everything from Doritos and Bouillon Cubes to some shampoos and pet food.

I have had a personal nightmare with MSG and thankfully discovered the trigger behind all of my mysterious symptoms. It’s hard to believe the difference in my quality of life since I eliminated MSG from my diet. If I ever crave doritos or want to eat grilled chicken or soup at almost any restaurant, I know to take my pain medication with my meal.

Of course if you look at the labels on the products, you will not usually see the words Monosodium Glutamate or the letters MSG. Manufacturers and restaurants try to hide it using the following names:

Monopotassium Glutamate

Monosodium Salt of Glutamic Acid

Hydrolyzed Protien

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil

Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protien

Pepsin

Trypsin

Textured Protein

Malt Extract

Yeast Extract

Soy Sauce (not all)

Flavoring

Natural or Artificial Flavoring

Smoked Flavoring or Smoke Flavoring (as in smoked turkey)

Chicken Flavoring

Beef Flavoring

Pork Flavoring
