The beautiful Turks and Caicos Islands…

Last week I was fortunate enough to have made my third visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands. A quick get-away from Miami ….only 78 minutes in the air! It is an unbelievable paradise with crystal blue water and baby powder-like sand. The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two groups of tropical islands in the West Indies, the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands, known for tourism and as an offshore financial centre.

The islands are home to roughly 30,000 full time residents of whom approximately 22,500 live on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. Cockburn Town, the capital, is situated on Grand Turk Island. More than 200,000 tourists visit annually.

We stayed in the luxurious Regent Palms, on Providenciales, in a penthouse suite that was purchased in the pre-construction phase by my uncle who currently resides in Chicago. He and his wife needed a warm tropical get-away from those ‘oh-so-cold’ winters in the Windy City. Overlooking Grace Bay, this “pied a terre” fit the bill! Check out : www.regentturksandcaicos.com.

Government – The Turks & Caicos Islands are a British Crown Colony. A Governor/Premier is appointed by the Queen and presides over an Executive Council formed by an elected local self-government. Government offices are located in Grand Turk, with branches on other Islands as needed. The legal system is based on English Common Law. A plan to seize the Turks and Caicos was just approved by the British MPs last month when the Premiere announced his plan to step down amid allegations of political corruption.
