Solar for the Sunshine State

Using solar energy for our homes may now be more feasible. One limitation was positioning solar panels for maximum exposure to the sun, and the logical choice would seem to be the roof. The building code for hurricanes precluded that option. Solar shingles that are part of the roof may be the solution. In South Florida, shingle roofs are not the prevalent choice. If a homeowner preferred a tile roof, I wonder if it would be possible to use solar shingles on a portion of the roof that was not visible from below, or to integrate them in a way that was unobtrusive.
