This year I had finally decided to jump on the Ragnar Relay bandwagon because some of my friends put a team together. I was really let down when I heard that the Florida Keys permit did not get approved and ultimately is changing the whole race, scheduled for February 4 and 5.
For the past four years there haven’t been any issues with the route, but in October locals in Monroe County voiced their concerns about traffic and noise to the County Commission. You see, each year the Ragnar Relay must obtain 90 permits to run the race and this year after a 4-1 vote Monroe denied theirs. All that it has taken is 1 “no” to change the course of the race!
The race attracts 500 teams made up of 8–10 runners each, and 1,000 support vehicles. Sheriff Rick Ramsay’s department and the commissioner’s office were flooded with resident complaints due to the gridlock that occurred during the time of the race.
Officials are still working out the new route, which will start in Miami and pause in Exchange 24 in Marathon. The teams then would drive to Key West, where they’d finish the third leg of the run and have the after-party on Duval Street. Final details should be here soon—county officials said mid-December.
If you are registered to run in this year’s Ragnar Relay you have a few options. You can run the adjusted course, ask for a refund, or participate in a different event. I’ll be getting the latest updates on the race here.
