Parks in Village of Pinecrest Part 6 – 2.5 Miles Long and Really Skinny

Without peeking ahead can you guess which one it is?

Yep! It’s Red Road Linear Park. It runs along the Snapper Creek Canal on Red Road between SW 88 Street and SW 111 Street. There is no sign – the only park in Pinecrest without a nice sign.

There’s a guard rail along the Historic Red Road side to keep any possible errant traffic away. So what do you do at this unusual park that is only a few feet wide?

As you travel from one end of the park to the other you’ll find three rest areas, each accented with low coral rock walls. You’ll look across the canal and occasionally see the roof tops of multi-million dollar homes well hidden behind lush landscaping and trees. Starting at SW 111 Street, on the opposite side of Red Road, you’ll pass the gorgeous Pinecrest Gardens (We’ll visit there tomorrow), Pinecrest Elementary School and a couple of local businesses that are veritable legends:

  • Pinecrest Wayside Market, an open air market where even with change of ownership a few years ago (current owners grew up in the neighborhood) you can get fresh fruit, vegetables and great juices and speciality items and where the sign says they’ve been the home of the best strawberry milkshake since 1948.
  • Hirni’s Wayside Garden Florist, family owned and humble appearing on the outside, but certainly no small operation.

The view across Red Road for most of the journey is beautiful upscale homes with rich, lush, well-manicured landscaping. The most amazing thing about this park is that even with heavy duty traffic at your side there is a feeling of calmness and peace.

In addition to this information about Red Road Linear Park, in the past week I’ve given information about the ground breaking for Flagler Grove Park, Coral Pine Park, Veterans Wayside Park, Suniland Park and Evelyn Greer Park. Tomorrow’s subject is Pinecrest Gardens the crown jewel in Village of Pinecrest’s park system.
