Merrie Christmas Park Finally Opened!

Have you wondered why Merrie Christmas Park in Coconut Grove has been closed for the past 2 years?

Well, the City of Miami had to close the park due to toxic metals found in the ground’s soil. The initial plan of redistributing the toxic soil and covering it up caused worry and protests by neighbors, so it was decided the old soil would be completely removed. The now, clean and updated park has a refurbished playground, new sidewalks, and not to mention… fresh soil! The clean up and upgrades cost nearly 1.2 million dollars.

How about a little history behind the popular recreational spot? Randall Norton “Randy” Christmas was number six of seven siblings in the Christmas family. He was a law school graduate from The University of Miami and served as the Mayor of Miami from 1955-1957, a time of tremendous growth in our city. He was first to serve in what are still the current offices of the City of Miami Municipal Government. Randy named the park after his daughter Merrie who passed away at age 15 in 1969.
