The cookie munchers of this household had exhausted the supply of cookies I like to keep in the freezer “just in case”; so I made cookies the other night. Same recipe I nearly always use. Same recipe my mother used 90% of the time when I was growing up. No name — just “Grandma Rodman’s Cookies,” since the original recipe had come from my Dad’s mother. One of those recipes where if you don’t have enough of “this” you just put in more of “that.” It occurred to me that my own mother must have changed the recipe. My grandmother would have had the brown sugar, the butter ( made her own), the oat meal, the coconut, the nuts of what ever variety, the dates, the raisins — but chocolate chips? They probably hadn’t even been invented! My son laughed at me when I mentioned it, saying “Mom! Chocolate chips have been around for a LONG time!” I decided to look it up. Sure enough, I learned they were actually invented in 1939, long after the recipe sharing would have taken place. Mom obviously added the chocolate chips. I’m glad. They are a nice addition.
Everyone needs to learn something everyday, even if it is trivia.
