Gables Property Tax Reduction On The Horizon

The proposed budget for the City of Coral Gables has been released by city Manager, Pat Salerno and its calling for a reduction in the millage rate from 5.869 to 5.669. That will result in a $1.5 million dollar reduction in revenue collected by the city for the next fiscal year.

If the budget is passed by the full city commission later this Summer, it will represent the 3rd year in a row that the city has reduced property tax revenue. According to Mayor Jim Cason, “Even during these challenging economic times, the proposed budget keeps us on the right path towards continuing to reduce taxes while providing quality services“.

Under the previous administration, the city’s workforce had become bloated with dozens of employees raking in well over $100,000 each annually. Now the city employs 791 full time employees, fewer than the city has had in the past two decades without any interruption in service.

The Capital Improvement Program includes funds for repairs and improvements to fire stations and the public safety building as well as replacement for playground equipment and for the purchase of additional green space.
