Coral Gables’ Granada Park Crown

Have you ever driven by Granada Park on Granada Blvd, just north of US1, and wondered what that 10 foot crown is all about? It’s an intriguing story!

The marble crown symbolizes the friendly relationship formed between Coral Gables and the Spanish city of Granada and was gifted to us by the mayor there in Southern Spain’s Andalusian Region.

Years ago, Coral Gables Mayor Don Slesnick led a group of about 25 people on a visit to the city. Our Gables delegation met with representatives of the local government and other cultural and business institutions with the goal of promoting understanding and stimulating economic development. Gifts were exchanged, business contacts were made, and the mayor of Granada was then inspired to visit our own Coral Gables! Suffice it to say, we welcomed him with open arms and fed the Mayor well! The gifted crown is Granada’s city symbol and symbolizes the friendship that was formed. Here’s to a deepening friendship between two beautiful, unique, internationally acclaimed cities!
