It is difficult\u00a0to involve ourselves in the\u00a0problems\u00a0of other countries when we have so many issues within our own borders that demand our attention.\u00a0\u00a0Today it’s the debt ceiling crisis and in the months to come, no doubt, we will be back in the throws of scorching\u00a0debates over Presidential candidates and issues.\u00a0As a country, we defend religious freedom throughout the world. \u00a0\u00a0However, I’d like to think\u00a0that Americans, as individuals, have a\u00a0global conscience\u00a0that\u00a0will\u00a0reach across oceans to address problems in other countries.<\/p>\n

In Central Africa, one such issue concerns the future of\u00a0one of Africa’s most treasured and valuable assets –\u00a0its wildlife.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Hunted for their meat, elephants, gorillas, giraffes, lions, crocodiles,\u00a0rhinos, zebras, gazelles and wildebeest\u00a0are species that\u00a0are victims of an\u00a0aggressive and organized bush-meat campaign\u00a0that has reached\u00a0epidemic proportion.\u00a0 Organized commercial bush-meat poachers kill the equivalent of over four million head of cattle every year and sell it to the poor rural Africans who\u00a0do not have the economic or physical means to acquire domesticated meat.\u00a0\u00a0 At one point, this billion dollar industry was\u00a0limited to animals with valuable horns or ivory\u00a0tusks.\u00a0 However,\u00a0\u00a0in recent years,\u00a0the nature of the kill has\u00a0become\u00a0indiscriminate placing the regions current wild-meat harvest in excess of a million tons annually.<\/p>\n

The loss of wildlife far exceeds the maximum sustainable rate.\u00a0\u00a0As Africa’s biodiversity\u00a0\u00a0dwindles, so will its eco-tourism, a major source of revenue for the country.\u00a0 Additionally, the rural communities\u00a0have few alternative sources of protein and income so a complete hault of the trade would be disastrous for the region.<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of banning the practice completely, a two part solution could include sustainable management of bush-meat hunting\u00a0practices and continued anti-poaching patrols.\u00a0 The hunting of non-threatened species could\u00a0be legalized and regulated to protect the food supply and livelihoods of\u00a0the hunters. Through legalization, poaching would be less\u00a0profitable and attractive.<\/p>\n

Anti-poaching\u00a0initiatives would still be necessary and\u00a0require funding and\u00a0trained volunteer rangers\u00a0supplied with\u00a0military-grade\u00a0equipment. \u00a0The African Conservancy supports Zambia’s Northern Province Honorary Wildlife Police Officers Unit. \u00a0This unit provides food, transportation and fuel assistance to the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) Wildlife Police Officers.\u00a0\u00a0The unit conducts roadblocks and train searches to confiscate black market game meat and illegal firearms. <\/span><\/p>\n

Fighting\u00a0the bush-meat hunters with sustainable legal alternatives and on-going vigilant patrols\u00a0\u00a0is imperative as this crime knows no borders. <\/span><\/p>\n
