Twenty-one Things Your Burglar Won’t Tell You:<\/h3>\n
\n

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.<\/p>\n

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.<\/p>\n

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste \u2026 and taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.<\/p>\n

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.<\/p>\n

5. If it snows while you\u2019re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway. (I realize this doesn’t apply in Miami, but it’s important to make the house look as if someone is home.)<\/p>\n

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don\u2019t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it\u2019s set. That makes it too easy.<\/p>\n

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It\u2019s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.<\/p>\n

8. It\u2019s raining, you\u2019re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don\u2019t take a day off because of bad weather.<\/p>\n

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I\u2019ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don\u2019t take me up on it.)<\/p>\n

10. Do you really think I won\u2019t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.<\/p>\n

11. Helpful hint: I almost never go into kids\u2019 rooms.<\/p>\n

12. You\u2019re right: I won\u2019t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it\u2019s not bolted down, I\u2019ll take it with me.<\/p>\n

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you\u2019re reluctant to leave your TV on while you\u2019re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.com.)<\/p>\n

14. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.<\/p>\n

15. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.<\/p>\n

16. I\u2019ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he\u2019ll stop what he\u2019s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn\u2019t hear it again, he\u2019ll just go back to what he was doing. It\u2019s human nature.<\/p>\n

17. I\u2019m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?<\/p>\n

18. I love looking in your windows. I\u2019m looking for signs that you\u2019re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I\u2019d like. I\u2019ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.<\/p>\n

19. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It\u2019s easier than you think to look up your address.<\/p>\n

20. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it\u2019s an invitation.<\/p>\n

21. If you don\u2019t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.<\/p>\n

When asked by a concerned person about using pepper spray, the local police department recommended that she get a can of wasp spray instead.<\/p>\n

The wasp spray, they told her, can shoot up to twenty feet away and is more accurate, while with the pepper spray, they have to get too close and could overpower you. The wasp spray temporarily blinds an attacker until they get to the hospital for an antidote.<\/p>\n

On the heels of a break in and beating in Toledo, self defense experts have a tip that could save your life.<\/p>\n

A teacher in the art of self-defense has told his students for decades to keep a can of wasp and hornet spray near their door or bed. \u201cThis is better than anything I can teach them.\u201d It is inexpensive, easy to find, and more effective than mace or pepper spray. The cans typically shoot 20 to 30 feet; so if someone tries to break into your home, \u201cspray the culprit in the eyes\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s going to give you a chance to call the police; maybe get out.\u201d Maybe even save your life. Please share this with all the people in your life.<\/p>\n
