With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau\u00a0 (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to\u00a0 become a victim of fraud or identity theft.<\/p>\n

The first phase of the\u00a0 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the\u00a0 addresses of households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United\u00a0 States and will gather information about every person living at each\u00a0 address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.<\/p>\n

The big question is – how do you tell the difference between a U.S.\u00a0 Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:<\/p>\n

\u2022 If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge,\u00a0 a hand held device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality\u00a0 notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before\u00a0 answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you\u00a0 don’t know into your home.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify\u00a0 address information. Do not give your Social Security number, credit\u00a0 card or banking information to anyone, even if they claim they need it\u00a0 for the U.S. Census.<\/p>\n

The Better Buysiness Bureau cautions: REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM\u00a0 HOW MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.<\/p>\n

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information,\u00a0 such as a salary range, YOU DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT\u00a0 YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION. The Census Bureau will not ask for Social\u00a0 Security, bank account, or credit card numbers, nor will employees\u00a0 solicit donations. Anyone asking for that information is NOT with the\u00a0 Census Bureau.<\/p>\n

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON\u00a0 GATHERING THIS INFORMATION. No Acorn worker should approach you saying\u00a0 he\/she is with the Census Bureau.<\/p>\n

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in\u00a0 person at home. However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by e- mail, so be on the lookout for e-mail scams impersonating the Census.<\/p>\n
