This\u00a0Saturday, October 31\u00a0is Halloween (eve of All Saints’ Day)\u00a0and boys and girls of all ages will be “trick-or-treating”. Unfortunately, Halloween is not as carefree as it once was.\u00a0 Below are some safety tips from the\u00a0the National Safety Council<\/p>\n
Motorists –\u00a0\u00a0 The National Safety Council urges motorists to be especially alert on Halloween.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully.<\/p>\n
\u2022 At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing.<\/p>\n
Parents – Before children start out on their “trick or treat” rounds, parents should:<\/p>\n
\u2022\u00a0Children should only stop\u00a0at houses or apartment buildings that are well-lit and never\u00a0enter a stranger’s home.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022 Establish a return time.<\/p>\n \u2022 Do not to eat any treat until they return home.<\/p>\n Costume Design<\/p>\n \u2022 Only fire-retardant materials should be used for costumes.<\/p>\n \u2022 Costumes should be loose so warm clothes (weather permitting)\u00a0can be worn underneath.<\/p>\n \u2022 Costumes should not be so long that they are a tripping hazard. (Falls are the leading cause of\u00a0 injuries on Halloween.)<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes . Mother’ s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking.<\/p>\n \u2022 Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children’s eyes.<\/p>\n \u2022 Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than\u00a0 a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eye-holes large enough to allow full vision.<\/p>\n \u2022\u00a0If you set jack-o-lanterns on your porch with candles in them, make sure that they are far enough out of the way so that kids costumes won’t accidentally be set on fire.<\/p>\n \u2022 If children are allowed out after dark, outfits should be made with light colored materials. Strips of retro-reflective tape should be used to make children visible.<\/p>\n Accessories<\/p>\n \u2022 Bags or sacks carried by youngsters should be light-colored or trimmed with retro-reflective tape if children are allowed out after dark.<\/p>\n \u2022 Carrying flashlights will help children see better and be seen more clearly.<\/p>\n \u2022 Knives, swords and other accessories should be made from cardboard or flexible materials. Do not allow children to carry sharp objects.<\/p>\n On the way – Children should understand and follow these rules:<\/p>\n \u2022 <\/span>Do <\/span>not enter homes or apartments without adult supervision.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022 Walk, do not run<\/span><\/strong>, from house to house. Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects or the uneven terrain can present tripping hazards.<\/p>\n \u2022 Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.<\/p>\n \u2022 Walk on the left side of the road, facing traffic if there are no sidewalks.<\/p>\n Treats – To ensure a safe trick-or-treat outing, parents are urged to:<\/p>\n \u2022 Give children an early meal before going out.<\/p>\n \u2022 Insist that treats be brought home for inspection before anything is eaten.<\/p>\n \u2022 To avoid the temptation of eating their trick-or-treat goodies, bring snacks in case they get hungry along the way.\u00a0 Wash fruit and slice into small pieces.<\/p>\n \u2022 When in doubt, throw it out.<\/p>\n \u2022 Make sure that an adult or an older responsible youth will be supervising the outing for children under age 12.<\/p>\n \u2022 Instruct your children to travel only in familiar areas and along an established route.<\/p>\n \u2022 Watch for children darting out from between parked cars.<\/p>\n \u2022 Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" This\u00a0Saturday, October 31\u00a0is Halloween (eve of All Saints’ Day)\u00a0and boys and girls of all ages will be “trick-or-treating”.
