Last week I was fortunate enough to have made my third visit to the Turks and Caicos Islands. <\/span>A quick get-away from Miami \u2026.only 78 minutes in the air! <\/span>It is an unbelievable paradise with crystal blue water and baby powder-like sand.<\/span>The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two groups of tropical islands in the West Indies, the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands, known for tourism and as an offshore financial centre.<\/span><\/div>\n

The islands are home to roughly 30,000 full time residents of whom approximately 22,500 live on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. Cockburn Town, the capital, is situated on Grand Turk Island. <\/span>More than 200,000 tourists visit annually.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

We stayed in the luxurious Regent Palms, on\u00a0Providenciales, in a penthouse suite that was purchased in the pre-construction phase by my uncle who currently resides in Chicago. <\/span>He and his wife needed a warm tropical get-away from those ‘oh-so-cold’ winters in the Windy City. <\/span>Overlooking Grace Bay, this \u201cpied a terre\u201d fit the bill! Quick Facts <\/span><\/p>\n

The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of 40 islands and cays, eight of which are inhabited. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>The Turks and Caicos Islands are situated about 600\u00a0miles southeast of <\/span>Miami<\/span><\/span><\/a> in the <\/span>United States<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and 50\u00a0miles southeast of <\/span>Mayaguana<\/span><\/span><\/a> in the <\/span>Bahamas<\/span><\/span><\/a>, and have a total land area of 166\u00a0square miles. The islands are geographically contiguous to the Bahamas, but are politically a separate entity.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Language – English<\/p>\n

Currency – The US dollar is the official currency of Turks and Caicos.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Time Zone – Eastern Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time is observed from April to October.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Climate – The average temperature ranges between 85 and 90 degrees from June to October, sometimes reaching the mid 90’s <\/span>especially in the late summer months. From November to May the average temperature is 80 to 84 degrees. Water temperature in the summer is 82 to 84 degrees and in winter about 74 to 78 degrees. A constant trade wind keeps the climate at a very comfortable level.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

People – Turks & Caicos Islanders are mostly descendants of Africans who were brought in to work the salt pans or the cotton plantations. The expatriate population consists of British, Canadians, Americans, French, Bahamians, people from Hispaniola and virtually everywhere in the world.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Economy – The economy of the TCI relies on the tourism industry, real estate development and the exportation of seafood. A wide variety of financial services are available, including company formation, offshore insurance, banking, trusts, limited partnerships and limited life companies. The Financial Services Commission regulates, develops and promotes the industry in major world markets.<\/p>\n

Dining Out- There is a wide assortment of quality dining options in Providenciales to suit all needs and tastes,\u00a0from the laid back casual waterfront dining patios to the exquisite dining experiences.\u00a0 Grace’s Cottage was one of our favorites: http:\/\/www.pointgrace.com\/resort\/activitesrestaurant.htm<\/a><\/p>\n

Government – The Turks & Caicos Islands are a British Crown Colony. A Governor\/Premier is appointed by the Queen and presides over an Executive Council formed by an elected local self-government. Government offices are located in Grand Turk, with branches on other Islands as needed. The legal system is based on English Common Law. <\/span>A plan to seize the Turks and Caicos was just approved by the British MPs last month when the Premiere announced his plan to step down amid allegations of political corruption.<\/span><\/p>\n
