Then I realized that I often get email from people who make an attempt at humor or sarcasm. But many times\u00a0 I misinterpret the senders intent.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m quite capable of taking something that was supposed to be funny; totally out of context: my feelings were hurt or I thought the sender was egotistical or weird or a number of other (mostly negative) things.<\/p>\n<p>When we are face-to-face with people we can<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> &#8220;read&#8221; them,<\/li>\n<li> catch the subtitles of body language<\/li>\n<li>or at least see a smile or a frown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We miss these things in an email.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">If you have any concern about how your humor or sarcasm will be interpreted<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>don&#8217;t write it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">OR<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">you can try using an <strong><a title=\"Emoticon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emoticon\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EMOTICON<\/a><\/strong> (but this is not a fail-safe way to avoid insulting someone)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a title=\"Emoticons\" href=\"http:\/\/messenger.msn.com\/Resource\/Emoticons.aspx\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">There are many emoticons to choose from<\/a> and a lot more we can learn about the nuances of email language.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">At a minimum I suggest:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\ud83d\ude42\u00a0 smile<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\ud83d\ude41\u00a0 sad<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\ud83d\ude09 wink<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I read a very interesting article on the psychology of it all (communicating and email).\u00a0 The article is <a href=\"http:\/\/plodplod.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/egocentrism-over-e-mail-can-we_12.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Egocentrism Over E-Mail: Can We Communicate as Well as We Think?&#8221;<\/a> by Justin Kruger, Nicholas Epley, Jason Parker and Zhi-Wen Ng.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was recently reading an email from someone and realized that they were trying to be funny.
