Remember Veterans Day – November 11<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

By law, Veterans Day is set aside to honor our nation’s military veterans both living and dead, who served in time of war. <\/strong><\/p>\n

So on Tuesday November 11 don’t forget to take a moment out of your day to say a prayer for the men and women who make this country great.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

The focal point for national observance is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery.\u00a0 At 11:00 am on 11 November, a color guard that includes all military services executes “Present Arms.”\u00a0 The President of the United States lays a wreath upon the tomb, steps back, and salutes.\u00a0 A bugler plays Taps<\/em>.\u00a0 A grateful nation has not forgotten.<\/p>\n

Marine Rifle Honor Gaurd at\u00a0\u00a0Arlington National Cemetery<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

After four years of carnage in Europe, the giant cannon finally fell silent.\u00a0 At 11:00 am on 11 November 1918 (the eleventh hour, of the 11th day, of the eleventh month) the Allies and Germany signed an armistice.\u00a0 The Great War, The World War, The War to End War mercifully ended.\u00a0 The whole world rejoiced.\u00a0 Thereafter the eleventh day of November became Armistice Day<\/em> in most of the western world.\u00a0 In Canada it became known as Remembrance Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the United States, Congress officially recognized Armistice Day in 1926. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Twelve years later it became a national holiday.\u00a0 Unfortunately, three decades and two wars later America realized that world order had been equally preserved by veterans of World War II and the Korean War.\u00a0 So, in 1954 Dwight D. Eisenhower, U.S. President, signed an act which changed the name of Armistice Day to Veterans Day<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

In 1968 (the flower-power generation was hard at work again) Congress changed the day of observance to the fourth Monday in October.\u00a0 Veterans Day had temporarily become just another long three-day weekend.\u00a0 The reason for the holiday had been forgotten by many.\u00a0 Fortunately, the public outcry rose steadily over the next ten years.\u00a0 Finally bowing to public pressure, Congress reversed itself in 1978.\u00a0 (excerpt from Warrior Culture of the U.S. Marines<\/a><\/em>, copyright 2001 Marion F. The eleventh day of November again became the day on which Americans observe Veterans Day<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
