Two bad bets for Miami lurk on Tuesday's primary ballot

Because presidential primaries head the ballot Tuesday, it’s hard to get voters to focus on what seem like far less vital issues. Unfortunately, a couple of offhand Yes votes among county ballot questions could breed disaster.

One pernicious issue could broaden gambling’s hold on our most vulnerable residents and degrade the business and visitor environment for the big-money foreigners who are propping up our economy in the face of a massive housing downturn.

The other could replace forever a professional property appraiser with a politician with no appraisal experience, broadening the potential for scandal where none has existed in a county that has met plenty of other problems.
