Last week homeowners received the Truth in Millage Notice from the Miami-Dade County Office of the Property Appraiser. The TRIM, a notice of proposed taxes, is required under state law. It includes the dates and the locations of the Public Hearings that will be held to adopt budgets and tax rates for the next year. The TRIM notice states the assessed value of the property as January 1st, 2012, and lists the exemptions that are in effect. The 1st impulse is to look for the bottom line, “How much will I owe?” It is important to check the Market Value and that the correct homestead exemptions and reductions appear. At the bottom of the page, is the contact information for the Miami-Dade County Office of the Property Appraiser. Homeowners should contact the Appraiser’s office if they think that the market value is inaccurate, or if an exemption or classification is not reflected. If the Property Appraiser is unable to resolve the matter, the homeowner must file a petition with the Value Adjustment Board by September 18th, 2012. Petition forms are available online at: http://www.miamidadeclerk.com/property_vab.aspR
