You’ll have to do your homework to make the most of Florida’s sales tax holiday Aug. 12-14. Set in the heart of back-to-school buying season, the holiday allows consumers to buy certain clothing, shoes, accessories and school supplies without paying sales tax.
But determining which items are tax-exempt and which are not can be as confounding as a multiple choice questionnaire.
Transparent tape is tax exempt, but masking tape is not. Loose-leaf paper is eligible for the tax break, but not computer paper. Binders are tax-exempt, but not staplers or staples. And forget about books and computers — they’re not tax-exempt at all.
Still, tax-free days, which begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 12 and end at 11:59 p.m. Aug. 14, offer savings potential for shoppers who study how to best take advantage of promotions. Read more
