At the MCPA Gallery, 1601 SW 1st Street in Miami a beautiful thing is going to happen starting May 1 to May 30, 2009 Monday through Friday 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. and Saturday 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. It’s the 21st Annual Art Exhibition by N.A.E.M.I. (National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill). The exhibit clearly demonstrates the abilities, skills and creativity of mentally disabled artists. The opening reception on May 1 at the gallery will present a musical performance entitled “Mr. Entertainment presents the genius music of artist with mental disabilities” from 6-9 P.M. N.A.E.M.I. has done wonders discovering, promoting, exhibiting and preserving the art of those struggling with mental illness. It was founded in 1988 in Miami by Juan Martin whose great work has helped enhance the self-image and self-esteem of artists with disabilities, providing them with vocational training and career development to become self-supporting through their art, with exhibits in galleries throughout the U.S., Latin America and Spain. It is well worth the time seeing the great art created by these artists as well as helping spread the word about the extraordinary work being done by Juan Martin. The National Art Exhibitions by the Mentally Ill is probably one of the best kept secrets in the world of art. Not to be missed.
