Starting Friday, Aug. 4, Floridians won’t have to pay state sales tax on certain clothes ($60 max), school supplies, personal computers ($750 max) or other items.
According to the Florida Retail Federation (FRF), this sales tax holiday is the state’s second busiest shopping “holiday.” It predicts “near record-breaking sales.”
Nationally, the average family is expected to spend $687.72 on apparel and accessories, shoes and school supplies, up eight percent from 2016, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics.
Items shielded from a sales tax
- Clothing, footwear and certain accessories selling for $60 or less per item
- Certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item
- Personal computers and certain computer-related accessories selling for $750 or less per item if purchased for noncommercial home or personal use
Items not included in the sales tax holiday
- Any item of clothing selling for more than $60
- Any school supply selling for more than $15
- Books that are not otherwise exempt
- Personal computers and computer-related accessories purchased for commercial purposes
- Rentals or leases of any eligible items
- Repairs or alterations of any eligible items
- Sales of any eligible items in theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments or airports
