There are a lot of little details that can make a house exceptional: stunning floors, a lush backyard, and a modern kitchen all come to mind. Here in Miami, one such detail is having hurricane impact glass windows and doors. As the name implies, this type of glass resists caving in in the face of hurricane winds and the debris that they throw. They might shatter, but they are designed to hold in place and protect the interior. These windows and doors also help homeowners save on electricity because they are tightly sealed and prevent cooler air from leaking out or hotter air from getting in. Additionally, they make break-ins more challenging for would-be crooks. These windows and doors are fabulous all around!
While impact glass is the gold standard, it is by no means the only hurricane protection option. Panel and accordion shutters work well to guard your home against big storms. The downfall is that panels are hard work to put up and take down, some people do not like the aesthetics of accordions, and both types of shutters make a house awfully dark. Though I will say that some of the best sleep you will ever get is in a cave-like shuttered house!
Like I said earlier, having impact glass is a fabulous detail. However, lately I have had some people dismiss houses outright because they did not have this type of windows and doors, but employed shutters instead. I think that this is a mistake. I love impact glass for all of its tremendous merits, but at the end of the day buying a house based on its windows alone is a silly thing to do. You can always upgrade your glass later – and get even more out of the house when you sell it down the road.
