Allen’s Drugs is a Miami institution, notable not just for its retro diner, but also for its glowing neon “DRUGS” sign. Due to the store’s location at the busy corner of Red Road and Bird Avenue, thousands of cars must pass it daily, making the sign a landmark – a landmark that is suddenly gone!
I recently drove through the Red/Bird intersection and thought that something looked odd, but could not figure out precisely what it was until I read about the missing sign in the Miami Herald. Their reporter called Allen’s Drugs to inquire about the mystery and discovered that the neon letters have been removed for painting. However, the city of South Miami indicated that no permit has been requested for its re-installation.
Will the Allen’s Drugs sign go back up? Only time will tell. I hope that it does because I love the retro charm that it brings to our thoroughly modern city.
